Five minutes with Tom Long, Pfaff/Compass Racing Audi RS3 LMS racing driver

Tell us a little bit about yourself, and your racing career.
My background and experience in racing started with lightweight sports cars, moving towards GT cars in the GrandAm Rolex Series era. After being heavily involved with the development of Mazda Motorsport projects for several years, the focus moved towards prototype competition. My most recent years have been spent in the IMSA WeatherTech Series, while still competing in the Continental Tire Series when the opportunity allows.

The highlight of my career so far was leading several hours of the Rolex24 on our way to a GT podium finish in 2011.

Tell us a bit about the RS3 LMS.
The Audi RS3 LMS (visit H.J. Pfaff Audi or Pfaff Audi to learn more about the road car) is exhilarating to drive. Its capability in the handling, braking, and acceleration departments – and the way that they are integrated into a complete package – is truly remarkable.

The element that stands out the most has to be the integration of Audi’s latest technologies into the driving/racing experience. All the systems work so efficiently together, whether it’s electrical or mechanical.

My favorite part of the driving experience is the incredible feel of handling confidence the chassis gives you based on all the systems working together.

What are your prospects for this season?
The format of the races are endurance based, both two- and four-hour events with a co-driver element required. The most challenging aspect is absolutely the endurance aspect, both for the machine and team alike.

Our season will take us all over North America at some of the most iconic circuits, starting in Florida, traveling throughout the northeast and west coast. One of the circuits I’m most looking forward to is Watkins Glen, NY.

Indeed, our toughest competition this season will in fact be our own team! Compass Racing has assembled some of the strongest driver lineups in the entire series, which will prove to be a very fun and exciting year!
