Pfaff BMW gets wet on first track day of the yearMay 10th, 2017
It wasn’t just wet at Pfaff BMW’s first track day of the year on May 5 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s driver development centre. The rain was positively biblical; extreme weather warnings were playing on the radio during the drive up, and we had a laugh when we passed a truck pulling a canoe, joking that it would be a better tool for the day’s exercises than the BMWs we were driving.
Still, about 20 hardy souls – and the incredible staff from Apex Driver Training – braved the weather for what turned out to be a great day at the track. Sure, the instructors had to constantly move the pylons on the road course farther and farther away from the apex in the first turn as the puddle at the inside of the corner slowly became a pond. Sure, the team staffing the skidpad were drenched. But the flip side of the poor weather was that everybody that participated in the day learned a lot more than they would have had the conditions been dry.
This track day was, after all, about education as well as speed and fun. Students were split into three groups based on their level of experience, with beginners starting on the skidpad and learning to induce and control slides before hitting the track; the conditions meant they were able to do so more frequently and easily. On-track, intermediate and advanced drivers discovered the limits of their BMW’s dynamics more often, while also learning just how much grip and traction they delivered – even in epic rain – when driven with a little bit of sensitivity and skill.
It was a remarkable day. Participants learned a great deal in a safe environment – there were a few slides but no off-track excursions – and a great camaraderie that developed between the rain-soaked drivers.
Pfaff BMW’s next track day is June 29 at CTMP’s Grand Prix circuit. Click here for more information.
