The BARC Grand Prix of Ontario and Midsummer Trophy RacesAug 24th, 2016
July 30-31 2016 – The H.J.Pfaff Audi Historic Audi 80 GT race car once again competed at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in the annual BARC Mid Summer trophy races.
The weekend started off a little unfortunate as driver Perry Mason had to abort the morning practice session due to the sudden failure of the fuel pump relay which was quickly diagnosed by Perry and Pfaff Autoworks GM Jeff Pabst. It was a $25 dollar part which caused the car to stall on corner 2 during the first lap of practice! After being towed in there wasn’t enough time to get any laps in though they tried, the track officials wouldn’t the #60 go out.
So now on to qualifying which was used as practice as well. The car was flawless and pole position was earned for the class by 2 seconds giving them premium starting spot for race one. Race one was late in the afternoon on Saturday, the temperature at around 30c. After a couple of battles with a Porsche and a Datsun, Perry was able to get the win 20 min later securing pole for the next heat. Race two on Sunday morning was a challenge as the higher classed Porsche in front of Perry, had an acceleration problem holding him up causing the loss of 3 positions by the time he reached turn three, However after a charge over the next 20 minutes he was able to regain first place and take the win with a 5 second lead.
The final race of the weekend for the hardware turned out to be a game changer. The rain arrived and decisions on suspension and tire set up was being heavily discussed between Perry and veteran crew member Darryl Hopp , Master Technician at H.J. Pfaff Audi. The historic Audi had not been previously tested in the wet, but the right decisions allowed Perry who started in scratch position due to a being gridded incorrectly due to an error in scoring, worked his way up to 4th overall within 2 laps and eventually finishing 1st in class and 5th overall! “Thanks to H.J.Pfaff Audi and Pfaff Autoworks for getting behind us and supporting our successful season thus far” said Perry Mason driver of the #60 Audi and shop foreman of H.J.Pfaff Audi in Newmarket.
The next event for the H.J. Pfaff historic Audi team is September 17-18 at the BEMC Indian Summer Trophy Races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Thanks to Mark Harris for the photos.
