First look at the McLaren 570SMar 31st, 2015
McLaren Automotive today announced the first model in its Sports Series family in New York. The 570S Coupe is a V8 powered, carbon fibre-structured two seater with a beautiful, aerodynamically optimized form. It will be on display to the public at the 115th New York International Auto Show, which opens to the public on Friday.
The first, and the higher powered, of two models in the McLaren Sports Series, the 570S introduces McLaren’s unique F1-inspired DNA to the sports car segment. Unsurprisingly, its performance statistics are astonishing. 0-100km/h is dispatched in a scant 3.2 seconds, 200 km/h comes up in 9.5 seconds, and the top track speed is 328 km/h (204mph).
A mid-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car, the 570S is powered by McLaren’s own M838T E (E standing for Evolution) 3.8-litre twin turbo V8, which generates 570PS (562 bhp) and 600 Nm (443 lb ft) of torque. Thanks to a dry weight of just 1313 kg with lightweight options, it is more than 160kg lighter than nearest competitor, and features a class-leading power to weight ratio: 434PS per tonne.
While it may be the least expensive McLaren model, the 570S features many of the same pioneering and race-derived technologies as the 650S, and offers them for the first time in the sports car segment. A newly-designed lightweight carbon-fibre MonoCell II chassis weighs less than 80 kg, and offers improved ease of ingress and egress from the cabin. Adaptive dampers and anti-roll bars are paired with a double-wishbone suspension design for superior handling, and Normal, Sport and Track settings for the powertrain and suspension allow drivers to tailor the car’s behaviour to suit their needs and driving situation. A 7-speed SSG transmission is standard, offering seamless and instantaneous shifts, and carbon ceramic brakes are also standard.
The 570S’ design is unmistakably McLaren. Its aluminium bodywork, wrapped over the carbon-fibre MonoCell II, saves weight and allows for a more intricate panel design. Distinctive features include flying-buttress C-pillars and McLaren P1-inspired door tendons, which both form part of a fixed aerodynamic package. All of the styling features, such as the aero blades, side skirts, fixed rear wing, and rear diffuser, are functional, and offer increased downforce levels and improved cooling. Unique 570S-design forged alloy wheels (front: 19-inch / rear: 20-inch) are wrapped with Pirelli P- Zero Corsa tyres.
With a focus on day-to-day usability and driveability, the 570S has impressive interior comfort and storage, with a best-in-class front luggage compartment of 144 litres. An infotainment system including TFT instrument cluster and seven-inch IRIS touchscreen, satellite navigation, Bluetooth and SIRIUS satellite radio, is mounted on a ‘floating’ centre console. The McLaren audio system ensures the lowest possible weight with optimal sound quality; an available upgrade includes a bespoke Bowers & Wilkins 12-Speaker Premium Audio System with 1280-watt surround sound.
The 570S features a high level of standard equipment including extended leather upholstery, and extensive interior upgrades and customization with ‘By McLaren’ specifications, as premiered on the 675LT, are also available. Choices include alcanatara, leather and carbon fibre.
